⚡ Know Before You Travel
Simple tips to help you enjoy a comfortable and hassle-free journey
- Pack warm layers - temperatures drop sharply after sunset, even in summer. Winters (Nov-Feb) require heavy woolens, gloves, and snow boots.
- The Mall Road and Ridge are car-free zones - explore on foot and wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Toy Train (Kalka-Shimla UNESCO heritage railway) is hugely popular - book tickets on IRCTC well in advance, especially on weekends.
- Kufri and Jakhu Temple are half-day side trips best done in the morning before the afternoon fog rolls in.
- Snowfall can disrupt road access Nov-Feb; check local conditions and carry chains or hire a local driver familiar with mountain roads.
- Carry heavy woolens, thermals, and windproof jackets - it can get below 0°C at night, and Rohtang Pass is bitterly cold year-round.
- Rohtang Pass requires an online permit (booked via the HP government portal) - a limited number are issued daily; book early, especially May-June and Sept-Oct.
- Altitude sickness can affect visitors arriving quickly from lower altitudes - rest on day one, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol on arrival.
- Solang Valley and Sissu are great for snow activities - hire gear locally and go with a guide for skiing or snow trekking.
- Spiti Valley via Rohtang/Kunzum is only accessible Jun-Oct; roads beyond Rohtang close with heavy snowfall - always check conditions before heading out.
- Old Manali's cafés and Hadimba Temple are best visited in the morning; the temple sees very long queues by mid-day in peak season.
- Mountain roads are narrow and winding - carry motion-sickness tablets and avoid heavy meals before driving.
- Mobile networks (especially data) are weak or absent in valleys and beyond Rohtang - download offline maps before you go.
- Hire local cabs or drivers for multi-day trips - they know road closures, detours, and permit timings far better than GPS apps.
- Cash is essential - ATMs are sparse beyond the main towns; carry enough for the whole trip.
- Sunburn at altitude happens fast - always carry high-SPF sunscreen, UV-protective sunglasses, and a warm hat.
- Respect local culture and temple dress codes - carry a light shawl; some shrines do not permit leather items inside.
